A Recovering Traditionalist is anyone who was taught, and thus now teaches, mathematics traditionally but is working to teach in a way that builds children’s conceptual understandings instead of just memorizing steps in a procedure.
When I was working with a group of educators and teacher educators under the direction of Dr. Johnathan Brendefur at Boise State University, we all started calling ourselves Recovering Traditionalists. I believe Dr. Brendefur started it so I am going to credit him with the term.
