If you’ve ever handed a worksheet to a student on their way out the door to intervention and hoped for the best, you’re not alone.  As Juliana Tapper put it in her Day 1 conversation, math intervention right now is “the wild, wild west.”  Every school does it differently…pull-out programs, digital curricula, an interventionist who’s handed whatever worksheet the student was just struggling with.  There’s no shared language for what intervention should actually look like.

Juliana’s session gives elementary teachers that shared language and a simple visual to go with it.

Two Models: Potholes vs. Staircases

Juliana describes two dominant approaches to intervention.

Just-in-case intervention treats gaps like potholes in a road.  The teacher’s job is to drive along, find every hole a student might hit, and fill it.  Going all the way back to whatever a student missed, sometimes years earlier.  It’s the model most diagnostic-assessment programs default to: give a test, map every gap, and start remediating from the bottom up.

Just-in-time intervention works differently.  Picture a staircase.  At the top of the staircase sits the major work of the current grade level.  That’s the essential content a student needs for the grade they are currently in.  From there, you work backward, one step at a time, asking: what’s the one thing standing between this student and that top step?  You stop building the staircase the moment you reach where the student currently is.  That staircase, not a list of every gap ever missed, becomes the actual focus of intervention time.

As Juliana puts it, with just-in-case intervention, “we may never make it to our end destination, which should always be that grade-level content.”  Just-in-time intervention keeps grade-level access as the destination the whole time.

Why This Matters More Than Which Program You Pick

Juliana didn’t believe this at first.  When her own administration pushed her to teach just-in-time intervention, she was skeptical.  Her students were behind, so why wouldn’t she go back and fill in what they’d missed?  She taught it anyway, mostly “faking it till she made it.”  At the end of the first unit, she gave her intervention students the same test as her on-grade-level students.  They performed just as well and in some cases, better.

Juliana points to research on teacher expectations – including the well-known Pygmalion effect study, where students told (falsely) that they were “gifted” went on to outperform their peers – as evidence that what we believe about a student shapes what that student becomes capable of.  Just-in-time intervention communicates high expectations by design: it tells a student, you belong in grade-level content, instead of you need to catch up before you’re allowed near it.

After telling her intervention students they’d be doing grade-level math, one student said, “So I’m going to get the same book as my smart friends.”  Another: “So I’m going to graduate on time.”  The shift wasn’t just academic, it was about how these students saw themselves as mathematicians.

Rethinking “Acceleration”

Juliana also tackles a word that makes a lot of teachers bristle: acceleration.  In an intervention setting, it can sound absurd – these students are behind, so why would you push them ahead?

Her answer: acceleration in intervention doesn’t mean skipping students forward.  It means the vast majority of instructional time still points toward grade-level content, even while foundational gaps get addressed along the way – through number talks, warm-ups, and number strings – rather than becoming the entire focus for weeks or months at a time.  She suggests a rough 80/20 split: roughly 80% of intervention time on staircase content that builds toward grade-level work, and 20% on the foundational number sense students still need.

A Practical Starting Point

For any teacher wondering where to start, Juliana’s advice is to draw the staircase.  Put the major grade-level content at the top.  Ask what one thing has to be true for a student to access it.  Keep asking that question, one step down, until you land on where the student actually is right now.  That staircase becomes the plan.

Her closing thought: “When students are given the chance to think, I get to learn more about their math skills, but also about them as people and build the community to know my kids more.”  Without that foundation of thinking and connection, she notes, it’s hard to build the staircase at all.  Which is exactly where Day 2 picks up, with math anxiety and what gets in the way of students sharing their thinking in the first place.
